did this book get published and find its way to the public library??
–is what I was thinking the other night after I read the first couple of chapters from I book I had just checked out.
Seriously.
I have been having trouble sleeping so I decided to try to find some “light” reading at the library. I used to always read before bed. I picked out a mystery novel that didn’t look like it would be graphic (don’t want nightmares!) and brought it home.
I actually laughed outloud. The writing style is… that of a 7th grader and both the characters and plot are unbelievably cliche. I am not exaggerating.
I guess the reason it frustrates me is that there are so many unbelievably talented writers that never get published. Not only is this one published, but it’s a series!
I also just finished reading Tortilla Flat by John Steinbeck. He’s one of my favorite authors… East of Eden being one of my all time favorite books. I guess I would have to say that this one wasn’t my favorite Steinbeck book by any means. It was pretty funny though and I’m glad I read it.
Next, I’m reading Jubilee City, a memoir that looks Jack Kerouac-esque. I’m looking forward to it.
What’s your favorite book??

You know, as ridiculous as this sounds, I LOVE to read, but have yet to read a Steinbeck novel. I guess I’m going to have to go to the library soon.

You should!! He’s great. East of Eden and The Grapes of Wrath are my favorites, but both are pretty long… well worth it though.

Ah this frustrates me as well! Especially with novels such as the “Twilight” series which has caught on in my age group: bad writing which gets published for some reason not apparent to me. Not only is it unfair to the truly talented writers, but it’s also giving a generation who reads less a false perception on what “good writing” is. It disappoints me! On another note, my favourite book would have to be Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte; that’s a real piece of writing! I have never read anything by Steinbeck, but I’ll be sure to check it out.

*Sigh* Twilight. I read the first one of the series, mainly because I wanted to know what everyone was talking about. The writing was pretty… eh, and although the plot was sort of interesting, it seems like it’s been done before too much. And the obsession with everything vampire which has followed is slightly annoying as well…
Definitely check out Steinbeck. I haven’t read Charlotte Bronte, but I have wanted to for a while.

Have you read “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin? I haven’t read it in a while but from what I do remember about it, it seems like it may really speak to you.

Actually I have read it, and I really liked it. Maybe I’ll have to pick it up again. Thanks for suggesting!
